THE VIKOS GORGE RIVER

Voidomatis River is believed to be one of the most clean rivers in Europe. The river runs through the Vikos Gorge, flows between the rocks of the Gorge for about 5 Kilometers and then meets the Aoos River flowing to the North towards Albania. It is actually the only river in Greece flowing from South to North. The river is flowing all the year around and is suitable for rafting and kayaking through beautiful landscapes.

No human activity influences its water quality, as the Zagoria villages don’t affect the river directly. Thus, the water is crystal clear.
One of the most interesting walks in the Zagoria area is taking the path along the Voidomatis River starting from the Aristi bridge and ending in the Kleidonia old stone bridge. The walk takes abourt 90 minutes and goes close to the river under the shadow of the planetrees.

In the middle of the distance, an old byzantine church built during the 16th century offers an opportunity to rest. The beautiful paintings (inside the church???) ,although damaged, are of great quality.

The river’s trouts are protected as no fishing is allowed, due to the fact that the Gorge is part of the Vikos Aoos National Park. However, at the end of this walk you can eat cultivated trouts in the nearby restaurant sitting on the river’s bank.
